Marcello De Barros became St Mirren's youngest-ever Premiership player when he came off the bench in the 1-0 defeat at Rangers. The 15-year-old defender's introduction at Ibrox marked a significant milestone for the Paisley club's youth system.
St Mirren confirmed the landmark on their official social media channels. "A William Hill Premiership debut for 15-year-old Marcello De Barros," the club said.
Rapid rise continues
De Barros had already broken the club's appearance record earlier this month by featuring in a League Cup victory over Dumbarton. His rapid progression has made him one of Scottish football's most discussed young talents. Rangers had shown a concrete interest in the teenager, but he chose to continue his development with St Mirren. He also spent time on trial with Arsenal, the English Premier League champions, earlier this year.
The debut came in a tight contest settled by a Bojan Miovski chip in the final minute. That result at Ibrox on September 9 was part of a recent run where St Mirren have lost their last two matches.
Manager Derek McInnes oversaw De Barros's introduction, continuing a theme of integrating academy products. The club currently has several players sidelined, including Keanu Baccus, Liam Donnelly and Malik Dijksteel, which you can monitor via our injuries list. St Mirren's next challenge is an away trip to face Hibernian on December 30.
