Hugh Murray will lead a squad of St Mirren legends as player/manager for the SPFL Tennent's Sixes tournament this autumn. The club confirmed the appointment and the full roster for the indoor football event, which features a host of familiar faces from the club's recent history.
St Mirren Football Club said they were "delighted to confirm" Murray's role. "A St Mirren great, Hugh made a club record 468 official appearances between 1997 & 2012," the club added in its announcement. The squad collectively has more than 1500 first-team appearances for the Paisley side.
A squad of Saints greats
Murray's playing career at the club saw him win the First Division title in the 1999/2000 and 2005/2006 seasons, as well as the Challenge Cup in 2005. He will be joined by several former teammates who shared in that success. Goalkeeper Ludovic Roy, who made 140 appearances, and outfield players Paul Rudden, Scott Walker, Barry McLaughlin and Mark Corcoran were all part of the 1999/2000 championship-winning side.
Lee Mair, a League Cup winner with the Saints in 2013 after 149 games, is also included. Simon Lappin, a veteran of 178 appearances, and the popular Jose Quitongo, who played 64 times, complete the line-up of former professionals.
Tournament details and schedule
The SPFL Tennent's Sixes will be held at the Braehead Arena on the weekend of October 3rd and 4th. All the action will be broadcast live on Premier Sports. St Mirren's group stage fixtures see them face Rangers and Kilmarnock on the opening day, before a day two meeting with Celtic. Tickets for the event are available directly through the Braehead Arena website.
Current context for the club
This nostalgic event comes as the current St Mirren first team sits fourth in the Scottish Premiership with 10 points from six matches. Their most recent outing was a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Rangers, a side they will meet again in the Sixes tournament. The senior squad's progress can be tracked via the standings, where they remain eight points behind leaders Celtic.
